Justice U U Lalit takes over as the 49th Chief Justice of the country

Justice U U Lalit's full name is Uday Umesh Lalit, the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Uday Umesh Lalit was born on 9 November 1957 in Solapur, Maharashtra.

Prior to his elevation as a Supreme Court judge, he practiced as a senior advocate in the Supreme Court.

Justice Lalit is one of the six senior advocates who have been directly elevated to the Supreme Court.

The tenure of CJI Justice UU Lalit will be only for 74 days and he will retire on 8 November 2022.

Lalit enrolled with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa as an advocate in June 1983

Justice Lalit also worked with former Attorney General of India, Soli Sorabjee.

In July 2014, the Supreme court collegium headed by then Chief Justice of India Rajendra Mal Lodha recommended his elevation to the Supreme Court as a judge

Justice Lalit's father was also an additional judge in the Mumbai High Court and before that he also practiced as a senior advocate in the Supreme Court

As A lawyer In August 2014, he also represented Amit Shah who was accused of the extrajudicial killing of Sohrabuddin.
